I am no fan of the current administration, namely the commander in chief. Most of you already know that. I mean, policy disagreements are one thing, but then the guy makes it a habit to say the most awful things. That said, am I the only one that gets the feeling that the opposition party is taking many of us registered Democrats for granted?
I have complete contempt for most of the of the things this president and his party stand for, have done, and our doing to this broken and weeping nation. But are we seriously going to pretend that there’s nothing wrong with the former vice president? It’s starting to make me very uncomfortable.
It’s not normal to continue to pretend he is well, but more than that, it is a complete disregard for his dignity. We all know that his VP choice is the most significant running mate choice in the history of this nation. This is true because he will either step down or become victim to the 25th amendment.
But it doesn’t end there for me. Add to all of that some of the things each member of the Biden-Harris ticket has said that they would support, which in all honestly, frighten me. People say “Oh, they’re just trying to placate the base.” Really? When did I stop being a part of the base? Aside from one local mayoral election in 2012, I’ve always checked the box next to the “D.” But I like to think I have principles and that I would hold true to them when lever-pulling time comes.
No, I don’t like the current guy. But that doesn’t automatically mean I’m going to vote for his most probable successor. I will vote true to my conscience, not my party. And if that means that some third-party dark horse is going to get my vote, which of course will take one away from Biden, then so be it. I am not about to sit back and let my local police department be defunded and disbanded. I know there are some bad cops, but that is the essence of every other profession.
No line of work is without some bad apples. Teachers, firefighters, doctors... they all have their pariahs. And although I believe every American is entitled to healthcare, I am in no way in favor of the abolishment of private health insurance. I am in favor of environmental policy to stave off climate change, but even I can admit the Green New Deal was a joke. Unfortunately, they don’t end there either. The list goes on.
I am finding it increasingly challenging to defend the party I love. The party of my parents and their parents. The party that I used to think really did care about justice, fairness and compassion for all people. As I work down this election year’s ticket into my local races, I am thankfully still able to vote for some great democrats. The top of my ballot is where I am struggling. Somebody either needs to convince me otherwise or accept that I told them so.
