Cold Shower and Hot Summer: A Match Made In Heaven

It’s hot. It’s humid. It’s gross. In the middle of the winter, so many folks long for these days. Not me. I like winter. I’m Canadian after all. If I wanted to live in these horrid conditions more regularly, I’d move to the southern USA. But I usually love it up here because these nasty summer conditions are short-lived, thank God!

So, what does a northerner do when it gets this hot? There are three options as I see it: 1) Go swimming. 2) Go bask in the air conditioning somewhere (though pretty much everything is closed now... ugh!) 3) Take a cold shower.

Now, before you go on laughing about my last suggestion, I ask that you at least hear me out. Not only is this option refreshing in the midst of these dog days, but there are actual health benefits to taking a cold shower... even for just a few minutes. Did you know, for example, that just three minutes in a cold shower can actually increase circulation? Did you know that a cold shower can reduce muscle soreness after a workout? Did you know you can actually boost your weight loss regimen? Lower stress?

This last one is the benefit that caught my eye. We’re all stressed right now. Sure we all have different ways of handling it and some are better at managing it than others. But a cold shower can help you in this arena no matter the level you are managing. Apparently, taking a cold shower actually increases the Glutathione and uric acid level in your blood. And these two elements work with your body to lower stress. Who knew?!

Add to these health benefits the contribution you will be making to cutting back on your energy consumption, which is good for both the environment and your wallet, and you have found a cure to your summertime blues.
